In our last post, we discussed two commercial carpet cleaning methods. This post will cover the third and fourth methods:
Bonnet Cleaning
External Extraction
Bonnet Cleaning
The Bonnet Method (Carbonated Cleaning), also called the dry cleaning method, is an adaptation of hard floor buffing applied to carpets. It is normally used as an interim cleaning method between deep cleans, depending on soil levels.
This approach uses a rotary or oscillating brush adapted with a stiff brush to drive wet, damp or dry pads.
The cleaning solution can either be sprayed on the carpet directly or pads can be soaked in the solution and squeezed lightly before being placed under the driving brush.
Sometimes, carbonated water allows for better soil suspension and bringing down the pH levels.
This method is not ideal for cut pile, due to pile distortion and the possibility of fiber damage. Also, since this is not an extraction method it may not be best suited for heavily soiled areas as some of the detergent will remain in the pile.
External Extraction Method
The External Extraction method is often called Hot Water Extraction or Steam Cleaning. This cleaning method is recommended by most carpet manufacturers and carpet fiber producers.
External extraction is the only method that can be classified as deep cleaning. Other methods such as bonnet cleaning are considered light surface cleaning because they are unable to remove soil deep in the pile. Also, the other methods leave residue of the cleaning agent in the pile.
With the extraction method a fine spray of water and detergent is used to force dirt out of the carpet, which is then sucked up by a vacuum slot located immediately in front of the sprayer.
Water and soil can be extracted into a portable or truck mounted holding tank. The truck-mounted approach is preferred for health reasons because dirty air and humidity are exhausted outside rather than recirculated indoors.
Additionally, a truck-mounted system is usually more powerful than a portable unit and therefore results in a better cleaning job and faster carpet drying times.
